We may tell ourselves over and over that it's over, that we are safe — yet the body sometimes keeps bracing itself. And one of the things that help it find its balance again is not reasoning, nor a technique: it is contact with another nervous system, one that is calm.

This is something we tend to underestimate. We often picture healing as work we do alone, within ourselves. And yet our nervous system has never worked that way.

We regulate through contact with others

From the very first days of life, an infant cannot soothe itself alone. It needs the presence of an adult — their voice, their face, their rhythm — for its nervous system to settle. The psychologist Edward Tronick showed this through his experiments on the interaction between infant and mother, and the work of Allan Schore on attachment, like that of Ruth Feldman on the synchrony of heart rhythms between parent and child, confirmed it: early in life, we regulate in twos.

This capacity, we gradually internalise, until we can soothe ourselves on our own. But we never entirely stop regulating through contact with others. A beloved voice that is enough to ease the tension, a quiet presence that reassures without a word: the need for another doesn't disappear — it changes form.

One calm nervous system soothes another

This is where, within a therapy, the presence of the person accompanying you takes on its full meaning. When she remains grounded, settled, present — even in a difficult moment — her state is transmitted. Through the tone of her voice, the pacing, the expression on her face, the way of simply being there, her nervous system sends the other's a message that is simple and profound: here and now, there is no danger.

This message does not travel through words first. It is picked up by the nervous system long before it is thought, beneath conscious awareness. The person being accompanied does not need to convince herself that she is safe: her body perceives it, through the presence of the other. Conversely, if the practitioner is herself tense, hurried, ill at ease, these are the signals the other's body picks up — because safety cannot be faked.

Polyvagal theory, proposed by the neuroscientist Stephen Porges, offers one way of explaining this phenomenon, describing how our nervous system constantly evaluates cues of safety or danger in the other. It is one illuminating framework among others — but the phenomenon itself, this transmission of a state from one body to another, is observed well beyond any single theory.

Why this matters so much after a shock

Trauma leaves the nervous system convinced that the threat is still present. This is why understanding, or reasoning with oneself, is not enough to feel better: as long as the body perceives danger, it stays on alert, whatever the mind may say.

This is precisely where contact with another nervous system becomes essential. The nervous system of the person being accompanied can, for a time, lean on the regulation of the one accompanying them — finding, through that contact, a balance it cannot yet produce on its own. An attuned presence is not a pleasant addition to the work: it is part of the path towards calm.

An important nuance

There is one case where this encounter calls for more time and delicacy. For some people, relationship itself has not, in the past, been a safe place. Their nervous system learned early that closeness could be unpredictable, even dangerous. So, paradoxically, the presence of another — or even simply relaxing — can be perceived as a threat.

In these situations, co-regulation does not come naturally. It cannot be forced. It is built slowly, by respecting the person's defences rather than trying to bypass them, until the nervous system discovers, at its own pace, that it is possible to let oneself be reached. It is a longer path — and it shows just how central connection is: it is often there, in relationship, that something can be repaired.

We are not made to heal alone

We need another in order to find our calm. This is how our nervous system works, from the very first day. The presence of a calm, attuned person can once again become the place where the body relearns, gently, that it is possible to be safe.

We do not heal alone. It is our nature as beings made for connection.

Sources

Tronick, E.
